Chosen Solution

I have had this issue before, took it to a cell phone repair shop & it was an easy fix..but I can not remember how they fixed it. I don’t want to take it anywhere due to it being this easy. The speaker phone button is greyed out when making/receiving calls, which means when someone tries to call or vice versa I can not hear. My music and videos play with sound just fine-the volume is turned all the way up with the ringer being ON. I have reset network settings and reset all settings and still nothing. Can someone please give me a helpful, real solution to fix this problem?? I have searched all over the internet and found nothing helpful.

Hi all, I had this issue too. I fixed it by restarting my phone like 5+ times. I just kept restarting it (soft reset) and tested it each time it came on. After several times (over the course of a couple hours) it finally started working again!! (Still, it’s so frustrating!)

Apple is aware and will replace your phone if you bring it in. They just replaced mine so this thread was very helpful - thanks!

I’v had this problem with iPhone 6 (ghosted loudspeaker button) and replacing the AUDIO (codec) IC solved it.

If only 1 Mic, or 1 component isn’t working correctly, most likely a bad component…Mic (Charging Flex), Ear speaker (Front flex assembly or ear speaker) etc… But when you are greyed out, or if multiple issues with Mic or speakers, most likely a board level repair by replacing or reballing Audio Codec (IC).

I had the same exact problems listed above. I started talking to apple support via phone Saturday April 26th and all they could offer was to back up my phone and restart it as new phone and see if it worked. That didn’t solve the problem. I took it to Apple on Wednesday and explained what was going on, and all he did was again restart it back as a new phone which didn’t solve the problem. Apple rep was not helpful at all. Only suggestion was buy a phone from directly from them for $319. I said no. Took it to an off brand iPhone repair shop and they confirmed that upgrading to new IOS killed my microphone, speaker & board (?) and there were software issues detected. They avised me to get a new phone and also to get insurance going forward. Especially if you get the X as the screen is $550 to replace. Not exactly what I wanted to hear, but off brand repair shop was way nicer and explained more than apple rep. So I took the defunct phone to att, asked for a new phone and traded in my broken phone. I also did NOT mention it was broken. I just wanted to get rid of it the easiest way I could. Frustrating situation to say the least, but feel better having a phone that works. I feel for everyone who is going thru this problem!

I experienced this problem this week. My phone is a 7+ that I’ve had for 16 months so definitely out of warranty. Two days ago I suddenly couldn’t use my apple headphones (not bluetooth), I couldn’t hear out of the earpiece and the speakerphone and add call options were greyed out. I tried several different things: upgrading to 11.4, restarting several times, backing it up and wiping it out, and restarting over and over (even though this now took twice the time it took before the issue). I contacted the apple support via chat online, they then set me up with a genius bar appointment. The guy at the store knew what it was immediately. They have to run a diagnostic on your phone to make sure there are no other damages to it and if it checks out they will exchange your phone for a refurbished model. I was lucky that they had mine in stock, and I didn’t have to pay but the cost is $349 if for some reason they try to charge you.

Same thing happened to my iPhone 7 Plus. I called and told Apple customer care about the problem, they said that even though my phone was out of warranty since it’s a known issue with the update they would replace it. I took it to the Apple Store and they said it’s a good thing I called and spoke to an executive because they would have charged me $349 but since he had put a case # on my issue with instructions to replace the phone at no cost they didn’t charge me. So call and then go replace your phone.

My sons iphone 7 had the same issue with greyed out speaker. Called the customer support did the whole reset thing and made an appointment for the apple store. Went to store and they said it was “user error” that he must have dropped it. Bullcrap! I showed them the article printed May 2018 that showed it was a known issue and they knew about it and they said, thats as of June 2018 they investigated the accusations and ruled out the update caused the issue. So apparently only Iphone 7 users are klutz’s who drop their phonez. They wanted $319 plus tax to replace. I turned to my son with the apple store manager there and said “Welcome to Samsung”.

I just kept having to do a “reset network” settings and it eventually fixed the problem not sure what the deal is but I’m almost ready to be done with the iPhone.

Does “hey Siri “work? Setting>Siri> Allow Hey Siri Does it let you set it up or can’t it recognise you saying it? If it doesn’t recognise you then it’s the mic on the front camera flex.

Apple is now aware of this issue and replaced my out of warranty phone for free. Escalate as much as possible guys!

Here I am a little over a month after posting this & it’s happened AGAIN! This is so so frustrating-we don’t live anywhere near an Apple store & it’s not under any sort of warranty either. I try taking it to a cell phone repair shop and I feel like they just try and find something wrong with the phone to get money out of me. I’ve had it with the iphone..probably just going to get a totally new phone that’s NOT apple related..hopefully everyone can get their issue resolved as I’ve had no luck..

Mine has been doing the exact same for a month now. Very annoying, only had this phone for a few moths!! What’s the best way to resolve this with Apple? As I can’t call them!! And I’m about 90 miles away from a store.

I’m no expert but my phone 7 did same thing I fixed it by accident Disconnecting it from my Bluetooth in the car turning Bluetooth on and off a few times it finally connected to the car and I was also able to use my phone again

I went to Apple store in Rancho Cucamonga, Ca and they ran diagnostics on device even though it’s almost a year over on it’s not I was switched out with a brand new iPhone 7. Cheers!

" I had a problem with the phone too, I took it to the repair and I was told that I had to order a new button and they would all repair it. The new button ordered here https://www.firstordercode.com/shop/alie… for discounts and also bought several cases for your smartphone.”

I have the same problem. My iPhone 7 Plus updated to the 11.4 1 during the night and when I woke up and tried to use my headphones I just used for the gym, it didn’t work. I use them while at work and it just wasn’t even registering my headphones. Bluetooth was fine in the car, but I didn’t have any calls, just used music. But when I tried to call my husband, the speaker, FaceTime, and add call buttons wouldn’t work because they were greyed out. He couldn’t hear me and I couldn’t hear him, but I’ve been playing music all day through speaker. Siri won’t work either. I want to go back to an earlier version but I can’t even find it under the iPhone storage settings like I did before when one of my updates didn’t download right. I have so much to try to back up (128g phone) so I’d like to fix this without getting a new phone… but is that my only option?

Was your phone ever fixed in the passed? Any water damage? If it has limited warranty “hasn’t been used longer then a year Apple will replace for free

My iPhone 7 is doing the exact same thing please let me know if you have found a solution to the problem.

This is a known problem with the iPhone 7. Bring it to the Apple Store. They gave me a new iPhone 7 to replace my old defective one.

Same problem. I reset phone, speaker worked for roughly 1 hour.. now it’s dead to the world again, that’s 4days ago. time for a Samsung

I had the same problem in May and Apple replaced my device for free. Now 5 months later, it did it again while on the latest 12.01 iOS! Went back to the Apple store expecting another replacement and they want to charge me $319 to replace it because the 90 day warranty on the previous replacement has expired. The guy at the Apple store said they stopped giving free replacements because they were giving out replacements left and right!

Just to give an update, I called AppleCare and spoke to a senior advisor. He was really helpful and told me he would ask about getting a replacement and call me back. Two hours later I got a call back telling me I can go to any store for another free replacement. I had to wait 90 min because I didn’t have an appointment but I did get my phone replaced again.

They do this on purpose you know. When there’s a new iPhone out, or when you choose not to update the iOS :) ^}*#**#%^

It’s board related eBay users fix it updating and restoring doesn’t do anything

Try to rest your phone while the headset or the airpods is connected to your phone, it worked for me

in iphone 6 plus if you have this kind issue you should first try replacing charging post if this not help then definitely you need doing audio ic kind regard

I am having the same issues, will Apple replace my 7 plus even with a small crack in the screen on corner?

For a week or two now my iphone 7 stopped working in the ear piece portion of my phone and speakerphone when making/receiving calls. Similar issue to others with same phone type. When it first occurred I was answering a call and clicked speakerphone button which came on and then went off. Clicked it again and it came on then off then flickered on and off several times before it greyed out and would not let me select any longer. Music played fine, bluetooth phone connection fine but if off Bluetooth could not hear anyone even though connected through earpiece or speakerphone and button to select sound source greyed out so no options. Bluetooth however worked. FIX: I just tried the hard reset multiple times back to back like others above and it fixed it. Took me 3x’s this round (I had tried the hard reset initially but not repeatedly) Each time checking to see if I can hear through the earpiece. Easiest way to check is open voicemail and see if it will let you listen through earpiece. Before when it was messed up could only listen to voicemail through speaker. Weird. Working again though!

I have the 7plus speaker option grey out couldn’t hear when talking on the phone , Apple is aware but could not help me , after 4 hard reset phone started working again …

Having the same similar issue, for one minute to another, I received a call, I couldn’t hear them, or them me. Looked to clean the speaker option, greyed out. Hard Reset about 5 times, yet nothing. When I start up the phone, the Apple icon is lite up for like 5 minutes while starting up. (Usually doesn’t take that long to light up). It’s an Iphone7.

I restarted my phone 4 times in a row and my speaker button came back! Thank you so much. I tried everything before this trick and nothing worked. so happy I don’t have to spend $ to get a new phone.. thanks again!!

Solveddddd turn off your phone for 1 hour let it rest, clean it if need to then turn it back on , take off the case too if u have one

i have this problem too but i just use my airpods and it works just fine but when they run out of charge thats a big problem

No. Apple won’t fix this anymore for free or exchange the phone at no cost to you. I tried that. They will try to sell you a refurbished iPhone of the same model you brought into the store to fix/wonder about re-calls. The refurb will cost around $350 (that was back in July/August). They know that most people will opt for a newer phone and sell the non-working one back to Apple for a discount towards the new unit. The recall which happened a while ago was done quietly. Apple never admits any wrongdoing but “quietly” recalls and fixes some issues. I had to sell my iPhone 7 Plus back to Apple at a loss (it was the most sensible solution while I was still in the Apple game) and get a the new XR which is hopelessly sad in terms of screen quality and button layout and ease of hitting them while operating the phone (turns the screen off when I don’t want that to happen, evokes Siri, etc). I was still “paying” the iPhone 7 Plus off when this issued happened to my phone (I was paying the phone slowly, interest free — I still had a few more months until it was all paid off). The iPhone 8 or the very latest, better performing (better than the XR) phones were crazy expensive so I bought a lesser quality phone that what my iPhone 7 Plus was. A regressive “upgrade” or a downgrade because this is what we have to put up with in this country, dealing with companies like Apple! It’s a shame! My current iPhone is my last phone I will ever buy from Apple! Unless they come up with some insane change and they start blowing my mind again (not holding my breath!) with some amazing products, I am not staying in this game anymore! I see this company regressing or at best, stagnating but absolutely NOT progressing in the right direction. The atrocity of this new CEO is an abysmal match for what Apple once used to be as a company and a testament to where the company is heading! I am shocked this moron is still leading Apple. Shocked! The continued financial success of Apple (which seems the only thing that matters!) has only been perpetuated on the momentum of what Steve pushed his company to become — a behemoth of success based on quality products and outstanding customer support and satisfaction. They sit on a mountain of cash so even if business is not going well , the losses are insignificant and thus, the !&&* with “how its customers are treated or what they have to say re issues like this and many others like it, in the recent years!”. The Android platform is superb these days! Lots of choices and priced affordably! Apple is no longer the only “player” in this phone business and you know, since no one in this company seems to give a %#@ starting with the top management, I don’t see much change for the near future. Jony Ive’s departure (the guy could only take so much!), pretty much sealed the deal as the company is obviously taking a whole new direction! The !&& with them! I’m not going along for another iPhone ride!

I had this same issue after updating my iPhone 7plus to the iOS 13.2.2 After doing the update right before leaving for work at 5am I noticed a bit of trouble using voice text. After getting home I was trying to answer a call from my father and couldn’t hear a thing however my speaker was working to play videos. I done a rest network setting and them had zero signal to do anything I then done it again and everything works fine. My daughter keeps telling me not to do these updates that Apple places glitches in them so we have no choice but to purchase a new phone. After today’s event I believe every word she said.

Listen I created this account just to say that I had the same problem on my iPhone 7 last year and finaly gave up and bought a new phone. Today about a year later I decided to try to repair it again and since the only solution that seemed to work for some people was to keep “soft reseting” the phone again and again until it worked. So I did that and after about 1 hour of doing that, NOW IT WORKS!!! If you still have this problem just keep doing the soft reset and call someone after each reset, if the speaker icon is still greyed out, do it again until it works. It might take you a while tho, maybe hours but !&&* if you’re short on money and can’t buy a new phone just do it. It’s worth it.

My phone is speaker input disable

Try a hard reset. Hold the power button and the home button at the same time and and hold them down until you see the apple logo. Try that and see if it works.

Got the same issue. I can hear them by turning on my Bluetooth headset connects to my phone… the same with viber and Whatsapp apps. some number can’t be called nor received calls.

this is what is happening to me to, the audio is completely greyed out, and when i tried to facetime someone it automatically fails. also when i take videos and speak in them i can’t hear what i’m saying. but if someone sends me a video i can hear it.
