Chosen Solution

Hi, I have an iMac mid 2011, 21.5, 2.5Ghz, Core i5, EMC 2428 and it runs out of security coverage on November 30 2020. I was going to attempt to add an SSD along with my current HD, but that seems a bit difficult. So I think it would be easier to replace the HD with an SSD. My Hard Drive is currently 500G and I think 1TB SSD should do the trick, as I am planning on using the desktop as a home server. I will also update the RAM to 16GB. In any case after the upgrade to the SSD, will the DVD drive still function? Thanks, Melonie

You have two options adding an SSD: Via the spare SATA port following the Installing iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2428 Dual Drive Kit with these parts iMac Intel 21.5" (Mid 2011) Dual Hard Drive Kit and your own SSD. Or, via swapping out your current drive iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2428 Hard Drive Replacement you will need a few added parts to do this. You many just want to get this kit iMac Intel 21.5" and 27" (Mid 2011) SSD Upgrade Kit As far as your DVD drive either method won’t effect its use. As an example I have a 27” 2011 iMac which has both the original 1 TB HDD and I added a 512 GB SSD which I use as the boot drive and I can still can use my DVD drive! I still think both are quite useful systems for a few more years. Maybe when Apple rolls out a killer ARM silicon desktop I’ll jump. for now for what I use it for writing and managing my business its more that fine and I’m not worried about Apple ending security updates for it. Todays OS’s are much more bulletproof than the much older OS’s line Lion and Mountain Lion! And people are still using these! If something comes up I might just jump to DosDude running a newer OS release thats still covered.
