Hey everyone. I’m currently backpacking in Mexico and it appears that my logic board just crapped the bed on my mid 2014 MacBook Pro. I have a lot of files and information on it that I desperately want to keep. I know there is a way to extract the contents of the SSD using a storage enclosure but I’m wondering if I replace my logic board, will my data remain unchanged?? I’m considering buying the storage enclosure just in case but would prefer not to since it’s extremely difficult to ship things to Mexico. Any information on this would be much appreciated! Thanks!!
Hi @sheacameron , The data on your SSD should remain intact. The SSD is removable from the laptop on the 2015 models. It is held in place by one screw. Make sure you disconnect the battery first before removing the hard drive!
It shouldn’t be an issue. If the actual SSD is still in working order, swapping to a new logic board would retain all your original data. Depending on what operating system that board last had on it, there may be some quirks due to firmware stuff. But realistically it shouldn’t be a huge deal. Especially if you keep it within the same model of MacBook. Some models there is a little wiggle room to swap around between different years, if you have a mid 2014, the form factor remained largely the same in that time period at least amongst the 13” models or the 15” models (you definitely cannot swap between these two), but you may run into issues with compatibility of all parts if you switch years, especially if you swap forward to a 2015, where the display is definitely not compatible.
