Can SSD’s between 2 different Macs of similar model and era be swapped? In doing so, does each function as the other did prior to the swap without any extra programming? If so, do the serial numbers remain with the original units? Update (03/09/2019) Thank you so much. But, if I swap SSD’s on like machines, doesn’t the operating system also go with, rendering the need to install an OS unnecessary?

Serial number belongs to the logic board, whatever other part you may replace won’t change that. Retina Macbook Pro kept the same 12+16 pins SSD from mid 2013 through 2015. You could as well swap with a Macbook Air Ssd of the same time period, they are just the same. You won’t need any special programming, only the operative system needs to be installed.

Yes you can do a swap for the same model and year, functionality is still. The serial don’t remain the system will read the new macs where you install your SSD.
