Yes, SATA 2 hard drives are backward compatible and will work on your machine, although they will only perform at the slower speed. iFixit also sells hard drives for your machine.
The short answer is yes. Everything works, I’ve even installed Vista SP2. However, I ran into a problem with my machine/HD combo that I’m still working out. See this Question/Answer Link Also here is my Discussion about it. I’m currently awaiting a 5400 RPM drive from Seagate to see if that will work in my situation. I’m not sure what I’ll do if it doesn’t. YMMV.
