A few days ago I replaced the speaker in my wife’s iPhone because it wasn’t working. Since then, any phone calls and facetime calls can only be done in speakerphone mode. when you try to turn off the speakerphone nothing happens. It’s in a constant state of “unable to make a private phone call” as I have come to call it. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Never repair anything for your wife, have a professional do it (even if you do it, tell her a professional did it). Years later, after it has worked well you can fess up, meanwhile you don’t have to take her abuse.

Go to settings, accessibility, call audio routing Let us know if that was the issue!

It is quite possible that dirt and corrosion are the source of your problem , not the speaker. Try replacing the dock connector.

Blew compressed air into the headphones port and it turned off “headphones” mode.
