I had my iPad pro 9.7” screen replaced at a local repair shop and now I’m having issues with the home button. The Touch ID still works fine and the button depresses fine when not installed; but once installed the button won’t depress anymore although the Touch ID functions. They decided to swap out the home button and the new home button will depress but the Touch ID obviously doesn’t work. They’ve inspected it under the microscope and can’t see any tears/issues with it. Does anyone know why one home button would stop depressing once installed but another would work fine?? They said they’ve never seen this and don’t know what the problem could be…
The small black dot in the middle of the home button act as a medium to depress the button, whoever worked on your iPad in that local repair shop had most likely pried off the black dot during removal process, or the adhesive wasn’t tacky enough to hold home button in place. Ask them for a partial refund or store credit since it’s their technician’s fault, you can justify by taking a close look at the original home button that wouldn’t depress - I’m pretty sure the black dot is missing.
