This past weekend my mbp became sluggish to the point that I thought some type of malware had infected it. It would crash restart when I would launch Firefox. Luckily I had my data backed up. I ran the hardware diagnostics and everything came back fine. No issues. I reloaded the OS (without wiping the drive) but I still had the same problem. One thing that I did notice is that I would have to restart my mbp multiple times to get it to boot, it would not play the startup sound. I took out the battery and from that point on it rebooted every-time I turned it on. I wiped my disk using disk utility and and again reloaded the OS. (clean install this time). I got everything set up and reinstalled a new version of Firefox and Avast. A few minutes later Apple told me that I had updates ready to be installed. Thinking that I wanted my mbp to be be totally protected I let it install the updates. During the update it got hung and never recovered. After a few hours I restarted my mbp and now all I get is the light at the front turning on. No sounds, no attempt to boot. I put a new HD in it thinking it could be a bad boot sector but I realize that it is not even getting to that point. My question is, is this a software, or hardware problem? Was it the update that killed it? I had not had any issues prior to this time with my mbp. Is there anything that I can do to fix it? I have googled and read many articles, but I have not found one that matches my scenario. Any help is appreciated.
I’m thinking you have a damaged HD SATA cable or you’ve updated the drive to a SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) and still have the older cable which is only rated for SATA II (3.0 Gb/s). Do tell us what the drive is make and model so we can double check its specs.
