I’ve tried to replace my old hard drive of in my MacBook Pro Computer (mid 2010) with a Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB SSD. I’ve been following all the instructions given, but when I have finished and tried to install the system from a pendrive (Mac OS High Sierra) onto the new drive, and gone to the Disk Utilities for formatting the new SSD disk, NO INTERNAL DISK appears, the new (and only) internal disk is not recognize by the computer. Could someone help me? Is this a problem with the Samsung 850 EVO in my computer model? Do I need to change the SSD type or brand to get it to work? Could I have done something wrong during the process? I will appreciate very much your assistance. Jose Luis Garcia Garrido
The Samsung 850 EVO SSD drive is a very good drive! I’ve replaced many a HDD’s in the MacBook Pro series. So its not the drive here thats having a problem. More often the HD SATA cable needs replacement. The problem is the cable tends to wear a bit rubbing on the rough surface of the aluminum uppercase and the creases of the folds. In addition this series cable had a design defect as well. Here’s the IFIXIT guide you’ll need to follow: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2010 Hard Drive Cable Replacement and here is the replacement cable: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2009-Mid 2010) Hard Drive Cable Place some electricians tape under the cable where it rests against the case to help protect it. Don’t over do the folds as you’ll weaken the foil wires inside. I also place some foam tape on the optical drive on the sides where the cable rests to help protect the cable from the case being banged which can push against the cable cutting it on the sharp edge of the optical drive. As for the version of OS, frankly I would stick with the older Sierra release as Apple still has a few issues with the newer APFS file system running on older SATA drive’d systems.
