When I attempt to take a photo where the flash is needed, it does not go off. All my pictures are coming out too dark or completely black.

The flash will not work unless the flash is turned on in the S9700 settings menu. Try other shooting modes as well. If these don’t work, take a look at the Nikon CoolPix S9700 Troubleshooting
