My Microsoft Zune 80 GB has stopped working. Iplug it up to charge it and it has on the screen contact support with a number 5 in a circle also a picture of a Zune with an X on it. Is there anything that I can do to fix it or do I have to send it to the Zune shop.

If resetting it doesn’t work, you should reinstall the software: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926993 Software available at: http://www.zune.net/en-us/products/softw… You may lose music or other data purchased/added since your last sync.

I fix these for a living, the number Five Error is usually the hard drive, sometimes the hard drive cable.

i have a contact support 5 and there is a chip getting really hot on the motherboard.(looking from the back its on the lower right side, behind the back button on the back side of the board) still say 5 is the hdd or hdd cable?

ERROR CODE 5——Yes, It can be a HD ribbon ZIF cable loose , BUT 99% of the time the Hard Drive has gone bad. No Fix other than replacement. I have many ZUNE 120Gb players & One at a time the hard drives went bad. No reasons—not dropped. I found the best repair is sending them to RAPID REPAIR. For $20.00 they will diagnose & give you an estimate. The smartest repair is having the Hard Drive (which is mechanical & will go out again) Replaced with a SSD digital drive. No moving parts, Solid state Memory, WITH a plus that they can replace the 120Gb drive with a 128Gb drive with extra memory. I’ve now have all 4 of mine done, Some with a new battery at Approx. $ 200. each or less. Just don’t throw that old ZUNE away ! Even broken, It’s worth big money on EBAY to guys & girls looking for parts that are NLA to fix their’s. Hope this advice works for all that live with ZUNE everyday like me. The best player ever on the market & A SHAME that MS ever ever stopped producing. But then again MS has never done too much right other than make the best music player on the market.

After replacing my zune LCD screen I got this message. I took the zune apart again and found that I did not properly replace the mother board ribbon. After properly replacing the ribbon, the zune worked fine. Hope this works.

I tried nearly everything to no avail.. just for the heck of it, I band my zune on my desk a few times and poof it started up just fine… yup, I pulled a Fonzie. Can’t make the problem worse!
