My iPhone’s microphones stopped working completely, I tried to test it by recording a video and there is no recorded audio from any of the mics. When I tried using voice memos it wouldn’t even let me hit the record button as if it can not detect a mic. The speakers do work by the way.
Apple replaced my 7+ out of warranty due to the 11.3 issue; mine acted like the headphones were plugged in, even when they weren’t. It’s an issue affecting early build 7 and 7+es. If you go in they will run a diagnostic and it will fail the audio part of it. Bear in mind this issue has only just been recognized by Apple. I didn’t even push them to get a replacement since I bought it used and figured I got a bum phone.
I would say it is most likley a problem with the audio IC on the logic board not making sufficent connection to the pads on the logic board. The latter would require microsoldering skills to replace that chip and put the nesecary jumper connections in place to make sure that this does not occour agian.
I waited through 2 additional updates to be released and installed and still my iPhone 7 was not able to make calls or record voice memos. I am an IT professional so I finally backed up to iTunes and backed up my device to the computer. I wiped the phone, restored backup to the phone and still had same issues. Went to Apple and after 3 hours of them trying to solve it they replaced the phone but we had to fight them.
If hanging a new charger port doesn’t fix it then it’s an ic problem, this is common fault on iPhone 7.
I just received a new iphone 7+ I called apple support and after long process of back and forth (it took a week), I received a new phone from an authorized service provider in Vietnam. They said that it is a factory default problem because of the model month and year that it was manufactured. My phone was the first batch, September 2016. I hope this helps.
i figured it out just now..don’t spend money. it is a software problem.. download ios software from your itunes in pc . then restore it. but before you restore just backup any thing important files from your cp.. hope this help to you..
This happened to both my daughter’s and son in law’s iPhone 7 both of which were purchased in September of 2016. With my daughter’s she had a protection plan and her provider replaced it. For my son-in-laws I was advised it would be $315 for the Apple repair. Both were fine at night when they went to bed but in the morning after the forced update the microphone no longer worked. I took it to the Apple store and they advised me it was a hardware failure and that this wasn’t the first time that they had heard this but there was no authorized repair. It seems that there will end up being a class action suit on this eventually. Terrible that Apple has planned obsolescence built into their devices. Had I not already gotten a pretty decent deal on an XS Max, I’m pretty sure I’d never purchase another apple product. The factory reset did not resolve the issue. Apple gave me $175 for the iPhone 7 with the broken microphone.
Having same problem with microphone all of sudden not working on iPhone 7 after a forced software upgrade. Record button on Voice Memo is greyed out, and camera records video with no audio. And I can hear people on the phone but they cannot hear me.
Its either you have your ringer and everything turned down or factory reset it. I have had this problem to before
My phone also had the red button greyed out. Or sometimes it would be red but it never actually recorded anything when I clicked on it. I was able to temporarily get it to work and apple wouldn’t replace my phone under warranty so I had to send it to a mail-in shop that could fix this. This article had some good suggestions like using bluetooth speakers. fixstop.com/blog/iphone-7-speaker-grayed-out-and-microphone-not-working-solution/
You were luckier than most. I’ll be joining a class action suit as soon as it is filed. Forced upgrades due to software upgrades.
I resisted installing software updates for this reason but had to in order to solve a different issue. Now, no microphone. Grrrr. I’m sure it’s out of warranty now. Will try the software retro download. Thanks for the tips!
7Plus on the same boat. Mic is not working . Using bluetooth device as a work around
I have two Iphone 7’s - One 7s and one 7+. Both of them are having this microphone issue - it started in March after an update - In my eyes this is a load of crap! When there sales is not what it should be, they roll out software that is not compatible with out of warranty phones and their solution…. buy a new phone :( Isn’t this illegal??
This is a widely known issue with the iPhone 7/7 Plus models, it has to do with the Audio IC which is a chip on the internal logic board that is prone to failure. The only “fix” would be an experienced technician successfully jumping a pin on the chip using specialized micro-soldering workbench tools. This is not an issue you can throw parts at to repair. Apple will not acknowledge the issue, but they will treat it as a whole-unit replacement when you bring the device to them. If you have AppleCare+ coverage on your device, you are covered. I would not take this to a repair shop unless you absolutely trust the technician working on it. One slip-up during a job like this can render the phone completely useless as the tech can break plenty of other fragile components on the board if they are not careful. One workaround to the problem is using bluetooth headphones, if you do not want to spend the money to fix it.
