Intel core duo 2 macbook. Serial number: W87421ZAZ5V My screen turns black, the computer is still running, but if I toggle the brightness off then on the screen comes back. This is the only way the screen comes on again—I toggle the brightness all the way down, then back on. Sometimes this works only momentarily, so all I get is a flash of a screen, but if I persist with it soon, within about 20 attempts, it will start to stabalise, and soon it stays on for ages, hours even. I can’t find the cable to hook it up to a monitor, but surely the way the brightness keys bring the screen back narrows it down a bit? I do have the lead somewhere so I will look! Thank you for any help. I think this website is brilliant by the way. A few things I have tried: I have made sure the display settings ’never’ go to sleep. I have reset the pram

When the display goes black, can you confirm if there is a faint image in the background? you can check with a torch shining on the LCD to see if the image can be seen. With LCD displays in these models, there are 2 basic feeds from the LCD to the logic board. The LVDS carries data/image, and the backlight is separate. From the sounds of it, you will find there is a faint image, and it is only the backlight that is going off. If it is effected by movement (the inverter cable goes through the left hinge) then it could be the cable is trapped in the hinge, otherwise, its more likely to be either the inverter board is failing (it sits in the hinge cover between the hinges), or the LCDs backlight is failing. I hope this helps
