Why does the optical zoom not work? Even when I switch the camera between different modes it still does not work.

Digital zoom cannot be used in the following scene modes: Scene auto selector, Portrait, Night Portrait, Easy panorama, or Pet Portrait. Try changing it to a different scene mode to use the digital zoom.
